How I Write Erotica, Part 2 – The Planning…

So last month … or rather several last months agowe started to talk about my creative process and just how exactly I go about writing these naughty tales that I write and where I find my ideas, which means that here in Part 2 it’s time to talk about actually getting the words down on the page…

And for what it’s worth, the reason that I didn’t write this editorial three months ago is because coincidentally … I’ve put out three new books since then! But we’ll talk more about that soon enough. 😉

In the meantime, however, to pick up where I left off last time, once I’ve got that brilliantly sexy idea that I’ve decided I want to explore, first there are a couple of questions that I find myself having to answer:

  • Is there really enough there for a story?
  • How long of a piece am I shooting for?
  • What am I going to use it for? (i.e. free story for this site, standalone book, collection, etc…)
  • Have I already written something similar to it in the past?
  • Seriously, this isn’t something that I’ve literally already done before, is it???

Of course, at this point I’ve written approximately 800 typed pages of kinky stories between my books and everything here on this site, so in reality it’s almost impossible to completely avoid repeating myself, but for the sake of everyone reading, I do try my best to consider what I’ve done before and even the types of stories that I’ve been writing lately just to make sure that I don’t write the same scenes over and over again or keep pounding away at one specific fetish and completely neglect all of the rest in the process!

Once I have an idea of what I’m writing for, I’m then able to plan out where I need to go from there because different lengths and styles and even how into an idea I really am all play a role in figuring out how I’m going to get there.

For example, if I’m writing a longer form story or something that requires chapters, I’ll definitely do a lot more outlining and planning than if I’m only expecting a short story of a few pages long that I should be able to knock out in one sitting. My outlines are typically very high level, though if I have specific pieces of dialog or even a vivid scene that I want to be sure to include, I’ll go into more detail as needed…

Here’s an outline that I put together for a story about a kinky doctor’s visit that I never quite circled back around to:

WIFE & HUSBAND GO TO DOCTORS TOGETHER

STORY FROM WIFE’S PERSPECTIVE (3RD PERSON)

HUSBAND BROUGHT IN BY HIMSELF TO GET “PREPARED”, THEN WIFE IS CALLED IN BY DOCTOR

THE DOCTOR WILL SEE YOU NOW.

DOCTOR EXPLAINS THAT WIFE HAS SENT HIM HERE TO RECEIVE A PROSTATE MASSAGE FOR RELEASE PURPOSES.

WALKS THROUGH SCENE – MY NURSE HERE IS GOING TO STRAP YOU DOWN TO THIS HARNESS, THEN WE’RE GOING TO REMOVE YOUR CAGE AND REPLACE WITH KALI’S TEETH.

WAIT – WHY AM I GETTING THAT?!  WE’VE NEVER DONE THAT BEFORE.

THAT’S WHAT YOUR WIFE REQUESTED.  DON’T GET COCKY WITH ME, DAVID – ESPECIALLY RIGHT BEFORE I’M ABOUT TO GO UP YOUR ASS.  YOUR WIFE HAS AUTHORIZED ME TO DO WHATEVER I FEEL NECESSARY FOR YOUR TRAINING, AND BEING DISRESPECTFUL TO ME OR ANY OF MY STAFF WILL NOT BE TOLERATED?  DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME?

NURSE COMES IN AND TIES DOWN

DOC PERFORMS MILKING

AS DOC LEAVES, SHE INSTRUCTS NURSES TO ADMINISTER A SPANKING WITH ANY OF HER PADDLES THAT SHE PLEASES.  IN FACT, I RECOMMEND THE BLUE LEATHER ONE – I’VE GOTTEN A LOT OF REALLY NICE COLORS OUT OF THAT ONE LATELY.  HE NEEDS TO LEARN TO BE RESPECTFUL OF WOMEN, BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF THIS OFFICE.

I’LL SEE HIM IN A MONTH FOR HIS NEXT APPOINTMENT.

As you can see, this is a more in-depth outline … not really sure why I never finished it! … but sometimes what will happen is that I’ll get hit with an idea at a really bad time when I just have no possible means to sit down and spend a couple of hours actually working on it, so in those cases my outline typically becomes more of a brain dump where I just try to get as much of the idea down on paper as fast as I can so that I can get back to grocery shopping or writing that report for my day job or sleep!

Seriously, a lot of my story ideas tend to wake me up in the middle of the night, where I’ll find myself stumbling to the computer at 3:30am and frantically pounding away at the keyboard before I forget and also simply so that I can go back to bed… 😛

If I’m out and about, or even just don’t feel like crawling out of bed, sometimes I’ll just send myself a quick e-mail from my phone with some notes in the body. I know that there are other great online collaboration apps that people use like Evernote and GoogleDocs, but for me e-mail has always been easier and it keeps it at the top of my inbox to deal with sooner rather than the next time I remember to login to Evernote!

Anyways, you’ll see that my format is pretty simple – basically just ALL CAPS so that it stands out in a Word document, and once I have my outline, I write the actual story in that same document so that I can just work through the outline notes a line at a time, deleting each one once I’ve written the story to that point. If I’m just working on a short and sweet story, my outline might literally just be a title and three bullet points of a couple words each … unless it’s a really in-depth tale that I know is going to require more organization to ensure flow and consistency across a dozen or more chapters, my planning is usually pretty minimal – just enough to give me a basic road map of where I’m trying to go before I hit the road.

Next time we’re finally going to get to the part of my writing process where I actually write erotica, but thankfully, next time is actually going to be right now because I feel guilty for taking so long to get Part 2 out of the box… 😀
